How To Keep Your Pipes From Freezing This Season

Whether you are a new homeowner or a seasoned veteran, many overlook the importance of insulating their home. This is due in part to either not knowing any better or because they cannot justify a costly home improvement project that they cannot see. While insulating your home to be comfortable year-round can be costly, the rewards you will reap from doing so outweigh the investment. More importantly, than anything you will be able to keep your pipes from freezing during the winter months, which can and will prevent bigger issues from coming up over the life of your home.

Here are seven ways to keep your pipes from freezing this upcoming winter season.

  1. Leave the cabinet doors under the kitchen sink open so that your heat can keep your pipes warm.
  2. Place a lamp with a 60-watt bulb in the potential problem area to warm the walls and pipes. Make sure there are no combustible materials near the bulb.
  3. Insulate your pipes with spray foam insulation. close and seal all foundation vents that are near your pipes.
  4. Insulate the foundation walls and the ends of the floor joists with spray foam insulation.
  5. If the crawl space access is inside the home, set a fan in the opening to blow warm air from the home to the foundation.
  6. If the water pipes are freezing inside the exterior wall, cut an opening in the wall to expose the pipes to the home's warm air. Insulate with spray foam insulation both behind the pipes, between the pipes, and the home's exterior wall. The hole in the wall can be covered later with a hinged door or a panel that can be removed during cold spells.
  7. Insulate your exterior walls. Caulk and seal around doors, windows, house faucets, and outside outlets.

While there are a few band-aid solutions to keep your home from being cold and your pipes from freezing during the winter, these band-aid solutions will only protect you for so long. The best solution to keep your home warm, your pipes from freezing, and your operating costs low is to insulate your home. While fiberglass and cellulose insulation is better than no insulation at all, they need to be replaced several times over their lifetime. Spray foam insulation is the king of insulation because it is a buy once cry once solution that will keep you comfortable year-round. More importantly, once installed it will never degrade, sag, or have to be replaced, unlike fiberglass or cellulose insulation.
